FAQ
What is so great about handmade soap?
Many people wonder why anyone would pay a premium for handmade soap when the store bought soap bars are so much less expensive. It is all based on the manufacturing process and ingredients.
Store bought soap is not soap at all, but harsh detergents. The process of combining heated oils with lye to produce soap is the same for all soap makers. However, many store bought soap manufacturers use tallow, or beef fat, as the base of their soap. They also extract the glycerin that is produced during the soap making process. Glycerin is a humectant, meaning it attracts and retains moisture in the skin. Soap manufacturers extract this glycerin from their soap to use in other high end beauty products. They replace it with synthetic detergents that are harsh and drying to the skin. Then they add synthetic "moisturizers" for label appeal.
Handmade soap retains all of the natural glycerin that is produced, and some of the oils that were not completely utilized during the saponification process. As a result, the handmade soap washes the dirt off of your skin, while the residual glycerin and oils naturally moisturize your skin afterwards. There is no more need for lotion after using a handmade soap.
Many people find their skin much more smooth and supple after switching to a handmade soap. It is really a small luxury you can provide for yourself, and nature's way of cleansing your skin.

We do use lye in the manufacture of our soap. You cannot make soap without lye, also known as sodium hydroxide.
Soap is created when oils come in contact with lye at a certain temperature. This process is called saponification and the result is soap. Many people are misinformed that there is lye in the finished soap. This is not true. All of the lye reacts with the oils and is "used up" during the saponification process. There is no lye left in the soap; if there was, you would have lye burns on your hands every time you used the soap. Rest assured, our soap is as safe to use as any other soap product you will encounter on the market.
Do you use fragrance oils or essential oils?
We use fragrance oils created in a laboratory setting. Although some customers prefer essential oils, we feel fragrance oils are more environmentally friendly and cost effective. Let us explain.
Almost all essential oils are imported into the United States from overseas, which uses fossil fuel resources for transportation by boat or plane. Essential oils can require hundreds of pounds of plant material to produce one ounce of essential oil. Not only does this use up the earth's land and encourage deforestation, it is very labor intensive to harvest. It takes many man hours to produce essential oils, much of it being produced in third world countries that do not have safe labor laws like we do in the United States. Finally, many essential oils use chemical solvents to extract the oil from the plant and thus leave some chemical residue behind. Many manufacturers of essential oils sell these oils as "natural" although they do contain a small amount of chemical synthetics.
What ingredients are used in your products?
We use only vegetable and plant-based oils for our soap base, consisting of olive oil, coconut oil, hemp oil, soybean oil and organic shea butter. All of our soap is handmade in small batches using wooden soap molds for the highest quality.
Our lip balms consist of candelilla wax, a plant-based alternative to beeswax, sweet almond oil, shea butter, vegetable-derived glycerides and flavoring.
All of our items are vegan, contain no animal products, and are cruelty-free.
How should I care for my handmade soap when not in use?
Handmade soap can last a very long time if properly cared for in-between uses. It is recommended to place the soap on a draining soap dish, or some other object that allows the water to evaporate after each use and promotes air circulation. Don't allow it to sit in a puddle of water, this will lead to the soap getting soft which reduces its useful life. Air should be able to circulate on all surfaces of the soap. Keep your handmade soap as dry as possible; this can be done by placing it on a top shelf in the shower or a slotted soap dish at your sink.
What is the shelf life of your soap?
Shelf life depends on how the soap is stored. You can prolong your soap by keeping it in a dry, cool environment away from heat and moisture. Typical shelf life of our soap is about 6 months to 1 year depending on the climate. We do not use preservatives in our soap, so it is prone to rancidity. Besides, when you receive your soap it will smell so good you will want to use it right away!
